"Why I Chose Integrative Medicine"

Throughout my career as a physician, I repeatedly met patients who had already been through a long medical journey. Many had consulted multiple specialists, undergone extensive testing and still had not received a satisfying explanation for their symptoms. They were often told:

"Your results are normal."

"From a medical perspective, everything looks fine."

"There is nothing more that can be done."

Yet they continued to struggle with fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal changes, sleep disturbances or a significantly reduced quality of life. These experiences profoundly shaped my approach to medicine.

I realised that health concerns cannot always be understood by looking at individual symptoms or isolated test results. The human body functions as an interconnected system in which hormones, metabolism, gut health, nutrition, stress, sleep and lifestyle all influence one another. This understanding led me to further specialise in integrative medicine, gender medicine, hormonal health and functional approaches to complex health concerns. My goal is not only to address symptoms, but to help patients understand the bigger picture, identify meaningful connections and develop personalised strategies that support long term health and wellbeing. Every patient deserves to be heard, understood and taken seriously.

Vita

Dr. Schmit studied Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and completed her specialist training in Internal Medicine before pursuing extensive postgraduate education in Integrative Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Her interest in integrative healthcare began during her own recovery from a prolonged illness. Despite having recovered from the acute infection, she continued to experience persistent fatigue and a significant loss of energy. Conventional medical investigations showed no abnormalities, yet she did not feel fully well.

Following treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine, including acupuncture and moxibustion, her health and vitality gradually returned. This experience profoundly influenced her understanding of health and recovery and sparked a lasting interest in looking beyond symptoms alone.

Motivated by this experience, she completed a postgraduate Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Danube University Krems and further expanded her expertise through clinical training and study visits in China.

In 2007, Dr Schmit relocated to Switzerland, where she worked in leading integrative healthcare institutions, including the renowned Aeskulap Clinic in Brunnen. Over the years, she combined her expertise in Internal Medicine with advanced training in bioidentical hormone therapy, orthomolecular medicine, mitochondrial medicine, phytotherapy, neural therapy and preventive medicine.

Throughout her career, she developed a particular interest in patients recovering from complex and chronic health conditions. She recognised that recovery often requires more than the treatment of a single symptom and that factors such as hormones, nutrition, metabolism, gut health, sleep and stress frequently play an important role in long term wellbeing.

Today, Dr Schmit is the founder and medical director of Integrativum in Zurich, where she provides personalised consultations for patients seeking a comprehensive and evidence informed approach to their health.

A significant focus of her work lies in telemedicine consultations and medical second opinions. Patients from across Switzerland and internationally seek her expertise to review diagnoses, laboratory findings and treatment plans, particularly when symptoms remain unexplained or recovery has stalled.

Her clinical focus includes:

• Medical Second Opinions

• Recovery after Chronic Illness

• Hormonal Health and Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

• Perimenopause, Menopause and Postmenopause

• Gender Medicine

• Digestive Disorders and Gut Health

• Chronic Fatigue and Burnout

• Adult ADHD

• Preventive and Longevity Medicine

In 2018, Dr Schmit published the book Diagnostik und Therapie in der Ganzheitsmedizin, reflecting her extensive clinical experience in the treatment of digestive disorders, hormonal health, chronic fatigue, ADHD and complex chronic conditions through an integrative medical approach.

Her mission is to help patients better understand their health, regain confidence in their recovery and discover possibilities even when they have previously been told that no further options exist.
